OC community objects to alternative sex convention: Some residents concerned for town's family-oriented image
By Joe E. Carmean Jr.

Many parents, business owners and town officials are concerned that a fall convention here attracting thousands of people who practice sadism and masochism could tarnish Ocean City's "family resort" image.

Members of Black Rose, a large and private pansexual organization that promotes and teaches bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism, have already booked the entire Princess Royale hotel, and they have begun reserving rooms in several other nearby facilities for what the group's Web site calls "three days of leather, workshops and parties."

Father John P. Klevence of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ocean City said he could think of other groups that would better represent the family image the town tries to portray.

"I don't think this is the best thing for Ocean City. I thought we were a family resort. Ocean City doesn't seem to be the spot for this," he said. "Sexuality is a beautiful thing, a gift from God. But it is a gift that comes with responsibility, including respecting the man or woman you are with, not this tie-me-up rough stuff."

Earl Cantine, owner of Atlantic Airbrush on the boardwalk, said he worries that this type of activity could be exposed to children. [cont.]

Sex Expo In Family Resort?

A growing number of people in the resort area are questioning why a convention celebrating cross-dressing, bondage and domination and other less traditional sexual relationships would be allowed in a town that carefully cultivates a family-friendly image.

More than a thousand members of the Black Rose group of Washington, D.C. will be in town for the weekend of Nov. 14 for what is being billed as the "World's Largest" pansexual, bondage and sado-masochism event. Pansexual is defined as a person who has or is open to sexual activity of many kinds.

Reverend Terry Davis, of the Ocean City Baptist Chapel, shared a similar sentiment about the forum. He said that while it was probably too late to stop the convention from coming he did not understand why it would be coming to Ocean City, especially since farther uptown that weekend will be the annual Fall Festival of Marriage that used to be housed at the Princess Royale that weekend.

"The family image of the resort doesn't seem like the family image when you let this kind of trash in," Davis said. "I don't understand how this can get in to Ocean City at all." [cont.]
